The carbon and nitrogen isotope composition of organic matter has been widely used to trace biogeochemical processes in marine and lacustrine environments. In order to reconstruct past environmental changes from sedimentary organic matter, it is crucial to consider potential alteration of the primary isotopic signal by bacterial degradation in the water column and during early diagenesis in the sediments.In a series of oxic and anoxic incubation experiments, we examined the fate of organic matter and the alteration of its carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition during microbial degradation. The decomposition rates determined with a double-exponential decay model show that the more reactive fraction of organic matter degrades at similar rates under oxic and anoxic conditions. However, under oxic conditions the proportion of organic matter resistent to degradation is much lower than under anoxic conditions. Within three months of incubation the δ13C of bulk organic matter decreased by 1.6‰ with respect to the initial value. The depletion can be attributed to the selective preservation of 13C-depleted organic compounds. During anoxic decay, the δ15N values continuously decreased to about 3‰ below the initial value. The decrease probably results from bacterial growth adding 15N-depleted biomass to the residual material. In the oxic experiment, δ15N values increased by more then 3‰ before decreasing to a value indistinguishable from the initial isotopic composition. The dissimilarity between oxic and anoxic conditions may be attributed to differences in the type, timing and degree of microbial activity and preferential degradation. In agreement with the anoxic incubation experiments, sediments from eutrophic Lake Lugano are, on average, depleted in 13C (−1.5‰) and 15N (−1.2‰) with respect to sinking particulate organic matter collected during a long-term sediment trap study.  相似文献

Fluorite can be used as a probe for the source of Sr and REE, as well as for the Sr and Nd isotope systematics of mineralizing solutions, allowing characterization of the composition, oxidation state and sources of the fluids. The 87Sr / 86Sr ratios in vein fluorite from the Santa Catarina Fluorite District, southern Brazil, are low (0.720 to 0.745) relative to those of the majority of host granites at the time of mineralization (90 Ma), but are similar to those of less abundant and less evolved Sr- and Ca-rich granites and plagioclases of the heterogeneous Pedras Grandes granite association. Major contributions of Sr from the unradiogenic Parana Basin rocks (87Sr / 86Sr90 Ma = 0.705 to 0.718) are unlikely, considering the radiogenic character of the lower 87Sr / 86Sr end-member in fluorite mixing lines. Estimated fluorite fluid partition coefficients (KdSr-Ca = 0.019 and DSr ≈ 600) indicate a Sr / Ca ratio in the fluorite-forming solution of 0.012, and Sr contents of 0.05 to 0.25 ppm, which are similar to those of present-day granitic geothermal waters. Initial Nd isotopic compositions of the vein fluorites (0.5120 to 0.512) are similar to those of the Pedras Grandes granites. The 143Nd / 144Nd90 Ma of the evolved granites of the Tabuleiro granite association, their accessory fluorites and the Parana Basin rocks are considerably more radiogenic (0.5120 to 0.5127) and these are thus considered to be unlikely sources of the fluids. The REE patterns of vein fluorites, normalized to upper continental crust, show a range of LREE-depleted patterns, with highly variable positive and negative Eu anomalies. The host Pedras Grandes granites show flat to slightly depleted UCC normalized LREE patterns with strong negative Eu anomalies. Depletion of the LREE in fluorites resulted from the mobility of HREE fluoride complexes during fluid migration. A REE fractionation model based on ionic potential ratios indicates that Eu3+ was stable during fluid migration and fluorite precipitation. The coexistence of pyrite and Eu3+ in the mineralizing fluids is consistent with low pH and oxygen fugacities near the hematite-magnetite buffer.  相似文献

Warning communities in the path of an advancing wildfire is a challenging problem. Decision makers need the most current information available to determine who should evacuate, when they should leave and what type of order to issue (e.g. mandatory, recommended, voluntary). This paper presents a new method for delimiting wildfire evacuation trigger points using fire spread modeling and GIS. Using data on wind, topography, and fuel in conjunction with estimated evacuation time, a trigger buffer can be computed for a community whereby an evacuation is recommended if a fire crosses the edge of the buffer. A case study is presented for the Corral Canyon section of the 1996 Calabasas Fire near Malibu, California, USA. The paper concludes with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of this approach.  相似文献

A possible interaction of (volcano-) tectonic earthquakes with the continuous seismic noise recorded in the volcanic island of Tenerife was recently suggested. Also recently the zone close to Las Canadas caldera shows unusual high number of near (< 25 km), possibly volcano-tectonic, earthquakes indicating signs of reawakening of the volcano putting high pressure on the risk analyst. Certainly for both tasks consistent earthquake catalogues provide valuable information and thus there is a strong demand for automatic detection and classification methodologies generating such catalogues. Therefore we adopt methodologies of speech recognition where statistical models, called Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), are widely used for spotting words in continuous audio data. In this study HMMs are used to detect and classify volcano-tectonic and/or tectonic earthquakes in continuous seismic data. Further the HMM detection and classification is evaluated and discussed for a one month period of continuous seismic data at a single seismic station. Being a stochastic process, HMMs provide the possibility to add a confidence measure to each classification made, basically evaluating how “sure” the algorithm is when classifying a certain earthquake. Moreover, this provides helpful information for the seismological analyst when cataloguing earthquakes. Combined with the confidence measure the HMM detection and classification can provide precise enough earthquake statistics, both for further evidence on the interaction between seismic noise and (volcano-) tectonic earthquakes as well as for incorporation in an automatic early warning system.  相似文献

The Punta del Cobre belt is located 15?km south of Copiapó, northern Chile. It comprises several Cu(-Fe)-Au deposits in the Punta del Cobre and Ladrillos districts, east of the Copiapó river, and the Ojancos Nuevo district, with the new Candelaria mine, and Las Pintadas district, west of the river. The mineralization in the Punta del Cobre belt is characterized by a simple hypogene mineral assemblage of chalcopyrite, pyrite, magnetite, and hematite. Average ore grades are 1.1 to 2% Cu, 0.2 to 0.6?g/t Au, and 2 to 8?g/t Ag. Massive magnetite occurs as veins and irregularly shaped bodies. The ore is spatially associated with alkali metasomatism and in particular with potassic alteration. The Cu(-Fe)-Au deposits are hosted mainly in volcanic rocks of the Punta del Cobre Formation (pre-upper Valanginian) that underlie Neocomian limestones of the Chañarcillo Group. This region experienced backarc basin formation in the Neocomian, uplift and granitoid intrusions in the middle Cretaceous, and eastward migration of the magmatic front of about 30?km between middle Cretaceous and Paleocene. To determine the timing of ore deposition and to reconstruct parts of the thermal history of the Punta del Cobre district, in the eastern part of the belt, we have obtained 40Ar/39Ar incremental-heating and Rb-Sr analyses of mineral and whole-rock samples. An 40Ar/39Ar incremental-heating experiment on hydrothermal biotite, formed synchronous with the Cu(-Fe)-Au mineralization, yielded an inverse isochron age of 114.9?±?1.0 Ma (all errors reported at ±2σ), consistent with a Rb-Sr isochron of 116.8?±?2.7 Ma calculated from 7 whole-rock samples. These data are interpreted to represent the age of potassic alteration that accompanies mineralization. Ore formation temperatures of 400?°C to 500?°C were previously estimated based on paragenetic relationships. Shearing at the Candelaria deposit occurred after ore deposition and before the main stage of batholith emplacement. Published K-Ar ages for the middle Cretaceous batholith near the Punta del Cobre belt range from 119 to 97?Ma. Our data suggest that the mineralization is related to the earlier stages of batholith emplacement. The biotite age spectrum indicates that the Punta del Cobre district was not affected by temperatures above ~300?°C–350?°C, the closure temperature for argon in biotite, during the contact metamorphic overprint produced by later emplaced batholithic intrusions. Whole-rock 40Ar/39Ar ages are considerably younger; incremental-heating experiments yielded an inverse isochron age of 90.7?±?1.2?Ma and weighted mean plateau ages of 89.8?±?0.6?Ma and 89.5?±?0.6?Ma. These samples are dominantly K-feldspar, for which we assume an argon closure temperature of ~150?°C, thus they give the age of cooling below ~150?°C–200?°C.  相似文献
